Human Epilepsy Project (HEP)

The MGH Epilepsy Service is recruiting patients for The Human Epilepsy Project (HEP), a five-year, prospective, observational study for patients with new-onset or recently diagnosed focal epilepsy. Dr. Andrew J. Cole is the Principle Investigator for this study. The main goal is to identify characteristics and biomarkers predictive of disease outcome, progression, and treatment response.

There are no medical risks to this study. The study will not affect the treatment of your seizures in any way. If you decide to take part in this study, you will have four study visits, which will take place over the next three years. Most of the study visits will coincide with your regularly scheduled neurologist visits.

All participants will receive an iPod touch as well as $50 dollars for each completed visit.

In order to participate, patients must meet the following criteria:

  1. Two or more focal seizures in the last year
  2. Age: 12-60 years
  3. Treatment started no more than 4 months prior to enrollment
